Nobody expects the worst to happen, but it is always prudent to plan for it. This applies as much to the world of aviation insurance as it does to personal accident insurance.

What is covered in Aviation Personal Accident Insurance?

Aviation Personal Accident Insurance in Thailand works pretty much as it does in the rest of the world. Personal accident insurance covers people against loss incurred while travelling by air, whether they are a passenger, pilot or other crew members. Aviation personal accident insurance covers each person insured during the flight, and also while they are boarding or leaving the aircraft.

Aviation Personal Accident Insurance also covers hijacking or any attempted hi-jack of the aircraft in which each person insured is travelling.

Cover will normally be to an agreed maximum sum regardless of the actual loss suffered by the claimant, whether this is for an injury or disability suffered, or even death.

Insurance can include all medical and other expenses incurred up to a year after the accident. This could be hospital costs – including surgery, nursing, rehabilitation and any ambulance – as well as repatriation or evacuation, or, in the worst case, funeral expenses.

Capital sum and schedule of benefits

Most insurers will require that a maximum capital sum is agreed for each person insured. This constitutes the total money that can be claimed as compensation, regardless of the actual loss. There will also be a maximum capital sum for all insured persons combined.

The insurers will issue a Schedule of Benefits, which acts as a sliding scale to calculate what percentage of the capital sum will be paid out in different scenarios, with 100 percent paid for death. This schedule will also indicate how much compensation will be paid out if the insured person is unable to continue his or her career due to any injury suffered during air travel. This compensation will cover a period up to a year after it is deemed there is no chance of any substantial improvement in the condition.

Aviation Personal Accident Insurance exclusions and conditions

As with any insurance policy there will be a number of exclusions or conditions placed upon any compensation being paid out. Exclusions will include when the insured person has committed a criminal act that contributed to the accident, or when they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs, except when prescribed by a qualified doctor.

It is always best to make sure you know exactly what is and what is not covered by the Aviation Personal Accident Insurance so please make sure you read the insurer’s wording or contact our team for any clarification.

We will be happy to provide you with full details of coverage, terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions, upon request.
